A former member of the Kiambu County Assembly has been jailed for four years for forging an academic certificate. Appearing before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Monday, Robert Kibe Githongo, the former MCA for Kiamwangi Ward was charged with making a false KCSE certificate purporting it to be a genuine certificate issued by Kenya National Examination Council.

Githongo was also charged with uttering the fake KCSE certificate on December 29, 2014, at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, purporting it to be a genuine certificate from the exam body. Kibe was convicted for two offenses; making a false document contrary to section 347(a) as read with section 349 of the Penal Code, and uttering a false document contrary to section 353 of the Penal Code.

Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko sentenced the former MCA to four years in prison, or pay a fine of Ksh.500,000 – Ksh.250,000 for each offense.

Mr. Githongo was however acquitted in three counts due to lack of sufficient evidence in the charges where he was accused of deceiving the Ethics & Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), providing false information to the anti-graft body, and making a false statutory declaration.
